NEWS FROM THE NURSERY-KINDERGARTEN

Betsi McGuigan to Return to Monadnock Waldorf School as Lead Kindergarten Teacher

Come and meet Betsi on Tuesday, May 28!

Educational research validates the key role of long term imaginative play in children's healthy development and academic success. Our play-based early childhood program supports children's social skills, fine and gross motor development, and literacy and numeracy, facilitating a smooth transition to the structured learning of First Grade. Young children learn by play, imitating the world, and trying every new experience. With ample play in their early years, students learn faster when our academic program begins in First Grade. This is a short article about the importance of play for the young child. Play allows a child to learn through doing and to develop social, emotional and cognitive skills. Countless studies have shown how important free play is to the development of self-regulation, self-discipline, imagination and much more. This National Public Radio story does a wonderful job explaining the problems caused by a lack of free play in children.

Our Nursery-Kindergarten program is full of healthy and creative opportunities to imitate through story, song, circle games, and many side-by-side activities with teachers. Our specially trained teachers provide a warm, home-like atmosphere that emphasizes daily work, play, artistic activities, seasonal celebrations and outdoor activities, all thoughtfully designed to support your child's healthy development.

Our morning program runs from 8:15am - 12:00pm with the option of aftercare through 5:30pm. Here, every day is a day of discovery.

Parent/Child Groups

Your child's earliest years are full of the joy of discovery and your little one relies on you to guide the way through life's first social encounters. Our Parent/Child play groups are led by experienced teachers who understand the needs of the very youngest children and who look forward to sharing a morning with you and your child. Our morning includes play time for the children and activities to keep parents' hands occupied as well. You may help prepare the snack, join the simple finger games, or craft a toy from natural materials. Your child will feel comfortable exploring new toys and making friends in this warm and safe environment with Mom or Dad nearby. We'll join in songs and finger plays, enjoy a hearty snack and play outside in our beautiful garden. As a parent, you will also have the opportunity to spend time with other parents and share in conversation. Parents who joined us in the past have found this a rewarding, supportive experience.

Our Parent/Child groups meet one morning a week in six- to eight-week sessions throughout the school year at our beautiful Nursery-Kindergarten location. Typically the morning runs from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. Children who tire easily are welcome to leave earlier. The groups are for children from babies through age 3 1/2. (Siblings are welcome).

One difference

Our teachers reach beyond the classroom, with a series of parent evenings throughout the year to explore topics such as bedtime routines, caring for sick children, nutrition, planning birthday parties, mealtimes, celebrating holidays, and setting limits. We’re always here to support your family.
